PROFILE/ Who is the diplomat who will replace Yuri Kim, speaks four languages,

David J. Kostelancik is expected to be appointed the new ambassador of the United States of America in Tirana, thus replacing Yuri Kim. It is expected that Biden will appoint the diplomat in his new position, although he has served in the American ambassador in Tirana even earlier. But who is Kostelancik?!

Kostelancik is a diplomat of the Senior Foreign Service of the United States of America, Minister Counselor rank. He began serving as a foreign policy advisor to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, in August 2021. Kostelancik previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission, and for two years, as Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of the US in Budapest, Hungary, where he provided leadership and policy guidance to the mission's staff of more than 350 people.

Among other things, Kostelancik was appointed in the US State Department as Director of the Office for South-Central European Affairs. He has served as Director of the Office of Russian Affairs, in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. The diplomat was also the Director of the Office of Europe and Asia at the International Bureau of Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

Earlier in his career, he served twice at the US Embassy in Moscow. Other assignments in which Kostelancik has been involved are the US Mission to the OSCE and the US Mission to NATO, focusing on security cooperation with Russia, the US Embassy in Albania and the US Embassy in Turkey.

He also served on the National Security Council, focusing on US relations with Central European countries.

Kostelancik holds a BA from Northwestern University in Mathematics and Political Science, as well as an MA from the University of Michigan in Russian and Eastern European Studies. He also completed a Master of Science from the National War College in national security policy.

The future ambassador of Albania is very well versed in the Albanian, Russian and Turkish languages. David J. Kostelancik is the father of three grown sons. Kostelancik's knowledge of the Albanian language is expected to make his duties as ambassador in Albania even easier.
