"The Economist Intelligence Unit", the "Intelligence Unit" of the prestigious British magazine The Economist, in the latest report on Albania, analyzes the economic, social and political developments.
The report provided by the journalist Tch Muhamed Veliu, brings this political analysis of the developments in the DP opposition camp.
"Mr. Berisha enjoys the steadfast support of PD's loyal supporters. Despite this, outside the PD, the appeals he makes are limited. His victory has marked an even deeper division within the DP. The United States of America and Great Britain see Sali Berisha as a destructive force in Albanian politics and in a wider regional context. In July of last year, the British Government banned Mr. Berisha from entering Great Britain, a reflection of the decision taken by the USA in 2021. This decision of Great Britain casts a shadow over the credibility of the DP, in the presentation of this political force to voters as an opposition political force".
This report evaluates the situation that Albania is going through after the increase in prices, a consequence of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
"During 2022, a wave of protests was marked, as a result of the rapid increase in the price of fuel and food. The government introduced a package of social measures, however these increased prices may bring a wave of concerns. Considering poverty and little trust in politicians, Albania is very vulnerable to political and social de-stability. This risk should be seen for the next 12-24 months".
The report brings this prediction regarding the third governing term of the socialists.
"The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the current government led by Prime Minister Edi Rama to serve a full term until 2025."
Regarding Albania's European journey towards the EU, The Economist Intelligence Unit says:
"The start of negotiations for membership in the European Union is a considerable success for the Socialist Party in power. However, the level of corruption and organized crime makes it impossible for Albania to become a member of the European Union during this decade."
This report also analyzes the relations between Albania and Kosovo.
"Albania will continue strengthening ties with Kosovo. Regardless of this, Albanian politicians have reacted not enthusiastically to what Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said, that if a referendum is held to unite Kosovo with Albania, he would vote in favor. Edi Rama is against this idea because such a referendum would create internal de-stability and conflict with neighboring countries and would stop Albania's European integration."
