Orban is offered as a mediator between Skopje and Sofia: Separation from Tirana,
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban with his Macedonian counterpart Hristijan Micoski

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, who made a two-day visit to North Macedonia, said that the separation of Skopje from Tirana, as far as negotiations for membership in the European Union are concerned, "is a historical mistake".

Orban, whose country holds the current EU Presidency, offered to personally serve as a mediator between North Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Another day, the news became public that the EU has invited Albania to open the first chapter of membership negotiations. Skopje and Tirana had been together in the membership process.

"I have a proposal that I presented to the (Macedonian) Prime Minister, Hristijan Micoski, and I told him that I am ready to use the Presidency of the EU and mediate this issue. If the parties are ready to accept Hungary as a mediator, it is their matter, but we are ready and we want to mediate", Orban said, adding that this is about "finding a solution that suits Macedonians and Bulgarians".

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, North Macedonia should hold an intergovernmental conference with the EU at the end of the year.

In July 2022, North Macedonia and Albania held the first intergovernmental conferences with the EU on their EU accession process, but for Skopje to hold the second conference, it must open chapters. In order to open chapters, North Macedonia must meet the condition of including the Bulgarian community in the preamble of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Macedonian Prime Minister Mickoski congratulated Albania and its people for progressing on the European path and called on Macedonians not to lose hope.

"We must not lose hope and be disappointed. We will continue to work, to solve the problems within the country that have been accumulated and inherited by the previous Government. But it is good that we have friends in the EU, and one of them is Prime Minister Viktor Orban", said Mickoski.

His government believes that the so-called French proposal, which includes the condition of amending the Constitution, should be respected, but only after North Macedonia joins the EU.

Orban also used the meeting with Mickoski to criticize Brussels on the issue of European integration.

"The people and countries of the Western Balkans deserve much more than what Brussels offers them. These countries should have been members of the EU long ago. North Macedonia and the Croats received a positive opinion in 2008. Since then, Croatia has been a member and negotiations with the EU for membership have not started with North Macedonia. This is a big mistake of the EU and I would say that it is a historical mistake, a mistake that can be improved because North Macedonia should be placed behind Albania", said Orban.

On September 27, before his one-on-one meeting with his Macedonian counterpart, Hristijan Mickoski, Orban stood by the press center at the Ohrid hotel, where an intergovernmental conference kicked off on Friday morning.

Orbani drank morning coffee, made phone calls and read documents on the hotel terrace, from where he then headed towards the prime minister's villa, which is located nearby.

He started his visit to North Macedonia on Thursday and since then several bilateral meetings have been held at the ministerial level.

Hungary currently holds the Presidency of the European Union.

Immediately after the formation of the Government in Skopje in June, during the NATO summit in Washington that was held in the first half of July, Mickoski agreed with Orban that North Macedonia would receive a loan from Hungary in the amount of 500 million euros.

On September 17, the law on the Hungarian loan was approved in the Macedonian Parliament.

The loan of the Hungarian Export-Import Bank, a private limited liability company, will be taken in one installment, its repayment term is 15 years, including a grace period of three years, and the interest rate is fixed, 3.25 percent. It will be repaid in 24 six-month installments, on February 15 and August 15 of each year.

The Macedonian opposition then charged that the loan deal was concluded behind closed doors, with highly dubious intentions, and that it has had political and economic consequences, greatly increasing the public debt.

However, VMRO-DPMNE says that the procedure is transparent and that for the first time there is a loan for which it is known in advance what it will be spent on and that it will help the municipalities and the economy.

In 2013, Orban was on an official visit to the country, when he was awarded the "September 8" Order for exceptional merit in the development and strengthening of friendly relations and peaceful cooperation between North Macedonia and Hungary. The order was delivered to the then president Gjorge Ivanov, while he also met with the then prime minister Nikola Gruevski. /REL
