Meloni: Migrant reception center in Lezha, innovative model

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that next week, migrant reception centers will be opened in Albania within the Lezha Area, where asylum applications will be processed.

Although the centres were expected to open on September 1, the Italian prime minister said they would be operational in the coming weeks but did not specify a date.

She also stressed that operational difficulties have been encountered in the establishment of these centres, but added that this difficulty is being overcome.

"As you know, in the coming weeks the centers envisaged by the Memorandum of Understanding with Albania will be fully functional to process asylum claims in Albanian territory, but under Italian and European jurisdiction. In recent months, as ministers Plantosi and Crosetto know well, we have faced various operational difficulties, but we are overcoming them one by one because we believe very much in this innovative project," meloni said.

Georgia Meloni explained that the migrant reception centres in Albania will serve as an innovative model for other countries, referring to some statements made by EU member states.

Its potential effectiveness is shown by the mobilization not only of the European left, but of international NGOs which, as you have read, are mobilizing against the Protocol. Except at the same time, most eu member states urged the Commission to take it as a model and as an innovative solution. We are aware that we will be under surveillance and therefore we will do everything in the right way," Meloni said.
