Socialist Mayor "explodes" after decision to dissolve her Municipality: There will be protests

The Mayor of Dimal Municipality, Juliana Memaj, has openly spoken out against the Socialist Party's proposal for territorial reform, according to which 15 municipalities will be merged.

Memaj opposes the merger of the Municipality she leads with the Municipality of Berat, while emphasizing that only four years have passed since the local unit was named Dimal Municipality.

"In 2021, at the end of April, it was renamed Dimal Municipality. It's too bad that the people of Dimal did not enjoy their new home," she told A2.

The socialist mayor also accused that the decision was made in a lack of transparency, since, according to her, the indicators of the municipality she leads are positive.

"How can a municipality that shows population growth be dissolved? Why should a municipality that invests with its own revenues even today be dissolved?"

As much as the Dimal Municipality has invested in these years, the Albanian government has also invested there.

"How will services be better provided by the Berat Municipality, when the distance from the center itself is 23 kilometers?" she said.

Further, Memaj emphasized that the Socialist Party should not be satisfied only with the opinion of mayors and municipal councils, but should also take into consideration the opinion of citizens who have taken part in protests.

"It seems that the protests will continue. The opinion of the citizens must be heard," said Memaj.
