Money has no color, even more so in politics! Albanian legislators, regardless of which party they belong to, the majority, the opposition, or even small parties, exploit every article of the law on "the status of a deputy" to get even pennies.
But how much are MPs paid and what benefits do they have in Albania?
Fiks Fare has researched official documents of the Albanian Parliament regarding salaries and benefits for the months of October, November and December 2025 as well as January 2026. In addition to the salary, which is 310 thousand lek, MPs also receive other benefits.
They receive a fuel reimbursement of 40 thousand lek. A reimbursement for telephone expenses of 17 to 20 thousand lek. They also receive per diems for domestic travel, amounts which in some cases reach up to 170 or 190 thousand lek per month.
They receive honoraria for meetings of permanent committees and sub-committees, in amounts up to 30 thousand lekë. Another payment they receive is a reimbursement for housing rent, an amount from 35 to 40 thousand lekë per month. In some cases, certain deputies also receive reimbursement for hotel bills for trips they make inside or outside Albania.
Some of the deputies, mainly young people, have the right to be provided with a diplomatic passport, based on the law. Meanwhile, they have requested to be reimbursed for the payment of the passport coupon, in the amount of 7,500 lek. The young people or some re-elected deputies have been reimbursed.
According to research by Fiks Fare, from October 2025 to January 2026, 27 new MPs were reimbursed with the amount of 7,500 lek. They are MPs of the governing majority, such as Zegjine Çaushi, Sara Mile, Iris Luarasi, etc., or even DP MPs Arian Ndoja, Enno Bozdo and Gent Strazimiri. MP Erald Kapri, of the Mundësia party, is also not missing.
The research showed that, in addition to the net salary of 225 thousand lek, MPs manage to receive the same amount in per diems and honoraria. According to official documents of the Albanian Parliament, in October 2025, the state budget paid MPs 29 million lek in salaries and about 22 million in benefits.
In November of that same year, salaries were at the same level, 29 million, while benefits were around 24 million. In December, benefits were reduced to around 16 million lek and salaries to the level of 29 million. If in December they saved the state coffers, in January benefits reached the figure of 28 million, while salaries were worth 29 million.
With these figures, MPs managed to benefit from 90 to 100% of their salary only from the benefits granted to them by law! In 2025, according to an internal report, the Albanian Parliament had a budget of about 2 billion lek, or about 20 million euros!
But do they have knowledge, integrity, or do they draft or approve good laws?!
Several studies have been conducted, which show that the majority of MPs are "dumb". But even these "dumb" are paid the same as the most talkative ones. In fact, there are dumb and talkative people on both sides of politics, who, regardless of color, manage to receive the same payments, salaries or bonuses!
At the end of the calendar year 2025, Fiks Fare asked some of these MPs how many countries the EU has! And if Albania were to join, it would become the 31st country, when unfortunately the EU only has 27 member states. Most of them didn't know!
Another question was who was the best speaker of the Assembly, from Haxhi Qamili to Niko Peleshi! In fact, Haxhi Qamili was the leader of an uprising in 1914 and 1915 that still wanted the laws of the Sultan in Albania. Again, they continued to answer without having information about who Haxhi Qamili was!
Fiks Fare interviewed former MP Myslym Murrizi, a critical voice even when he was an MP. Mr. Murrizi said that most MPs, left and right, or from small parties, abuse bonuses. He emphasized the compensation for rent, claiming that most MPs, if not all, have 2 or 3 luxurious houses and still receive rent payments.
Another abuse is the mobile phone tariff, which turns out to be 17 thousand lek per month. If you look for packages in all 3 companies, the maximum amount of unlimited calls, messages and internet goes up to 2500 lek!
"There needs to be an investigation, even a criminal one. Now it's not one of these big thefts that are happening, but it's the height of stealing by MPs. They use these invoices to pay rent when they have several houses. They even make allowances as if they are holding meetings in the electorate, when they don't even have an office or anything else," says Murrizi.
He adds that even the payment of 40 thousand lek for fuel is abusive. Even if they are going to drive every day, no one uses up their quota, but they distribute it. A calculation by Fiks Fare shows that, with 40 thousand lek for fuel, and with a price of 170 lek per liter, the car must travel a full 3,900 kilometers.
With this amount, it turns out that the deputies receive 235 liters of fuel, converted to a car that consumes about 6 liters per kilometer, they would have to travel 3,900 kilometers.
What MP travels so many kilometers?!
He proposes that MPs be given a salary package with a ceiling, up to about 4 thousand euros per month, and not with these allowances, as it leaves too much room for abuse. Another of his proposals is that the election of MPs by the people should be returned, with direct voting in the zones, and that they should even have an office for meetings with citizens.
