The court hearing for the former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu regarding the incident of "Gërdec" has been postponed again. In a statement to the media, after the postponement of the session, outside the premises of the Special Court, Mediu's lawyer said that it is normal that the session has been postponed since it is a long court process. The next session is expected to be held on July 7.
Meanwhile, we remember that the last session marked a victory for the families of the victims who tragically lost their lives in the explosion of Gërdec, on March 15, 2008.
While it was expected that the prosecution would present the final conclusions for the former minister, a repeated request from the Durda family to be part of the process, which was joined by one of the injured in the tragedy, caused the Special Prosecution to change its position by asking the court accept it.
Mediu is charged with two criminal offenses for "Abuse of duty", one provided by the Criminal Code and the other by the Military Criminal Code, since at the time the incident occurred he was the Minister of Defense and is also charged with the responsibility for the implementation of the Military Criminal Code.
Today's session is preliminary, so that the parties can familiarize themselves with the charge filed by SPAK and which has officially arrived at GJKKO. There it would be decided whether the file in charge of the former minister will be passed for trial or will be returned to SPAK for more in-depth investigations.
According to media reports, Mediu's lawyers will request the dismissal of the case against him, with the argument that the criminal case has been dismissed. Earlier, Fatmir Mediu stated that the trial against him is political.
