The Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, has spoken again about the arrest and imprisonment of the mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, calling it an unpleasant event and that it will not be ignored by Greece.

"The Beleri issue will not be hidden under the table. I hope that Greece's relations with Albania will improve, but this is a very big obstacle. They are wrong if they think that something like this can easily be put under the table, ignored or forgotten" , said Dendias in a television interview for the Greek media.

He called the incident very unpleasant.

"It is something extremely unpleasant. It will create tensions in the relations between the two countries and I am afraid to say that it will also create problems on Albania's path to Europe, something that Greece is supporting and helping. The arrest of an elected president, in a European state of law, is not acceptable. We saw his file, we analyzed it, and the evidence that appears to be included does not justify the temporary detention of an elected president ", he emphasized.

Fredi Beleri won the local elections for the Municipality of Himara on May 14.
