"Fatal blow to criminal organizations", Meloni: The pact for
Giorgia Meloni

In the two and a half years since her vote of confidence as Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni claims to the daily "Corriere della Sera" that she has never made a choice for which she should feel ashamed, despite the mistakes she acknowledges.

While speaking about the clashes with the judiciary regarding the migrant agreement signed on November 6, 2023 with Albania, Meloni describes the protocol with the Albanian side as a progressive solution.

"The executive has made the right choices regarding the issue of immigration and the protocol signed with Albania is one of them. It is a very innovative solution, which is serving as a lesson not only in Europe, but also beyond, as it is clear that it aims to deal a fatal blow to criminal organizations that speculate on immigrants to increase their profits ," said Meloni.

The head of the Italian government even says that the issue of immigration has also been the focus of discussions with British Prime Minister Starmer, describing the agreement reached with the Albanian side as an example that should be followed.

"It is a phenomenon that affects the entire European continent even outside the EU's borders. With Starmer we agree that we must intensify the fight against traffickers, work towards greater cooperation between our police forces, strengthen the commitment to voluntary repatriations and not be afraid to also explore innovative solutions, such as the one that Italy has launched through the protocol with Albania to process asylum requests in non-EU territories, but under Italian and European jurisdiction ," said Meloni.

Meloni's statements come at a time when, at the end of December, the Italian government decided to move forward with the implementation of the protocol for sending rejected asylum seekers to the Gjadri camp.

Giorgia Meloni's cabinet bases its plan to continue the agreement with Albania on the Supreme Court's decision of December 19, which states that it is the government's right to determine the list of safe countries of origin.

The Rome Court, which twice turned back the Libra ship with its decisions, has requested the opinion of the European Court of Human Rights on safe countries of origin.

Meanwhile, on February 25, the European Court of Justice is expected to issue a ruling on the designation of safe countries.
