Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting with journalists and media representatives from European Union countries, who have come to Tirana due to the great international interest that has aroused civic protests, initially launched for Zvërnec.
"Why don't you keep Zvërnec, like that, special?" was the question that a foreign journalist asked the prime minister, to emphasize that permission for a resort in that area cannot necessarily be granted.
Edi Rama's response was that Albania now needs elite tourism, not the mass tourism that has developed in recent years, because it does not bring income and the negative effect on the environment is much greater than the benefits.
"Look at Montenegro, look at Montenegro. They have no agriculture and many of the Montenegrins get what they consume from Albania. They have no factories, they have nothing except tourism. For years they have had the highest salaries and pensions in the region. Because they brought tourism to the level of luxury tourism.
"Luxury tourism is what protects a country from what mass tourism can do to it. But we can't continue like this, we need luxury tourism to change the scale of income and reduce the pressure that tourism has on the environment," he said.
Edi Rama continued by emphasizing that the flamingos and pelicans in the Narta lagoon only arrived after the Socialists, and he at their head, took power in 2013. The Prime Minister told European journalists that his government had added to the map of protected areas, so no one could lecture him.
"Flamingos, do you know when they started coming back? When I came to government, there were no flamingos and Albania had illegal hunting. Flamingos and pelicans started coming back when we declared illegal hunting for 10 years, and a forest moratorium."
Nobody can lecture me about the environment. We created the first map of Albania's Protected Areas in 2017. The first Register and the first Inventory. We found Albania with less than 15% of protected areas and now we have 25%.
"In 2024 we made changes to specify what is allowed and what is not allowed in the different categories of protection, because there is not just one category of protection. Vjosa, Narta are protected, they are not being affected and will not be affected," concluded Edi Rama, Prime Minister.
