Edi Rama: We are engaged in reforming the forest management model

Prime Minister Edi Rama is participating in the "For you, nature" activity, where the priorities of the environment, biodiversity and forests are being discussed, which must enter a new phase through a unique model of sustainable administration and development.

Rama said that they are working on a reform process in this sector.

" We are focused on one of the most difficult aspects of the negotiation process, the environment, where without a doubt the way protected areas are viewed, treated and promoted is a strategic part of this entire complex related to the nature that surrounds us."

Looking back, there is undoubtedly much reason to be proud of where we are today. A decade ago, we had to make two very radical interventions to ensure a necessary turnaround where both illegal logging and illegal hunting had become real wounds that were spreading across the body of Albania's nature.

Today we can proudly look at the results of the moratoriums that at the time created debate and were viewed with great suspicion, whether in terms of forest regeneration or fauna in Albania.

Overall, protected areas and nature territories were under constant aggression from illegal construction and pollution, and I am glad that today the balance speaks of a significant reduction in environmental crimes, for a significant control of the territory in terms of environmental protection from the aggression of unauthorized construction, but also for a significant limitation of pollution.

None of these elements have yet been eliminated as problematic and in the entirety of these elements, what constitutes a necessary point to ensure a successful progress in this process related to the accession negotiations, but also directly to the future, is a much better and safer management of forests.

"For this very reason, together with the Minister of Environment, we are engaged in a process of reforming the forest and nature management model as a whole, a reform that must begin with a restructuring of the national agency for protected areas and forests, bringing them together and creating a synergy between the two to have an agency that deals 360 degrees with protected areas and forests," said Rama.
