Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke from Amsterdam about the latest failure of Albania and North Macedonia to open membership negotiations with the European Union.

As he was asked about the obstacles that cause this impasse, Rama said that the Balkans is a strange place and it is crazy if you are going to introduce the internal debates of the region into the integration policy.

Don't try to figure it all out because I'll make life more complicated than it needs to be. We are the Balkans and we come with some problems. We want to be part of the EU and then if countries like Bulgaria in this case use their EU membership and veto to discuss the story at a political level it is even more complicated. And I think every time history is taken over by politicians to solve, the result is that the story becomes more complicated than it was before they took over. This is all a shame, related to the warped spirit of expansion. Bulgaria is not the issue, it is the EU, the way it works is outdated. It must be changed. It is outdated.
