Photos of Valentin Ftoni, the 52-year-old Albanian who was arrested in New York after more than 25 years on the international wanted list, have been published.
For more than two decades, he managed to "hide" from Albanian justice, as according to information made public by the authorities, Valentin Ftoni was living illegally in the United States using different identities.
Wanted since 2001 for three murders, investigations conducted over the years have raised suspicions that, after leaving Albania, he used forged documents and at least two false identities to cross the US border.
Valentin Ftoni's name appears in two different decisions of the Shkodra Court for three murders that occurred in the early 2000s.
Specifically, on September 19, 2000, in the village of Ças in Velipoja, the spouses Gjelosh and Ardiana Markaj were killed. According to the black squads, it was suspected that the double murder was committed for blood feud reasons, for which the main accused was Ftoni, who on September 28, 2001, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was also found guilty of illegal possession of weapons.
Although he was wanted for the double crime and the Shkodra Court sentenced him to 25 years in prison, Ftoni mysteriously managed to lose track and disappear from Albania.
However, again on November 18, 2008, the Shkodra Court sentenced him again to 25 years in prison for the murder of Tom Gac, an event that occurred on August 12, 2001. In this case, he was also found guilty of illegal possession of a weapon.
But the murders for which the 52-year-old Albanian was accused do not end there. Ftoni was also tried for the elimination of Behar Beci, an event that occurred in 2001. However, he was found not guilty in this case.
According to information provided by American authorities, it was announced that the investigation into Valentin Ftoni began in August of this year, after Interpol Tirana shared information with American authorities.
Initially, investigators discovered that the 52-year-old was hiding in the New York metropolitan area using several false identities. The investigation was then passed to the Homeland Security Task Force in New York, which located his location and arranged for his arrest.
The US authorities' announcement reports that Albanian authorities are also seeking Ftoni in connection with another murder, making him the prime suspect in a fourth incident. However, it is worth noting that this detail is not included in the State Police announcement.
Njoftimi i plotë i marshallëve amerikanë:
“This arrest is a testament to the tenacity and professionalism of our investigators and law enforcement partners,” said Ricky J. Patel, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York. “When our team received information that a fugitive wanted for multiple murders may have been living in the New York area under false identities, our investigators acted quickly to locate and arrest him. No matter how much time has passed or how far a fugitive travels, we remain committed to ensuring they are held accountable.”
Ftoni was taken into federal custody following his arrest. He will remain in custody pending further immigration proceedings.
USMS expresses its gratitude to all domestic and international law enforcement partners whose cooperation and investigative efforts contributed to the successful location and arrest of Fton, including INTERPOL Tirana, the Albanian State Police, the Diplomatic Security Service at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection National Targeting Center, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the UN Mission in Kosovo, and the Kosovo Police.
