She got married, but she didn't know it. This is the story of a woman in Australia told in one simple sentence.

She called off her wedding after discovering that a fake wedding ceremony she had attended as part of a prank, footage of which would later be posted on social media, was actually real. The woman, whose identity has not been made public, says her partner was a social media influencer. He convinced her to attend a fake ceremony that he would use as a prank on his Instagram account.

But she later discovered that the marriage was real and that her partner used it to gain permanent residency in Australia. A judge in Melbourne ruled in the woman's favor and ruled that she had been cheated. The bizarre case began in September 2023 when the woman met her partner through an online dating platform. They began meeting regularly in Melbourne, where they initially lived. In December of that year, he proposed to her and she accepted.

Two days later, the woman attended a ceremony in Sydney. He had told her it would be a party where everyone would wear white. And so she did. But when she arrived at the ceremony site, she was shocked and angry to see that there were a total of four people invited: her partner, the photographer, a friend of the photographer, and another guest.

"When I went, I didn't see anyone in white. I asked him what was going on. He took me aside and told me that he was having a fake marriage for social media, more specifically for Instagram, because he wanted to increase his posts because he wanted to monetize his Instagram page," she said.

She added that she believed his excuse because he had over 17,000 followers on Instagram. She also believed that the marriage could only be civil if it took place in court. However, she remained worried, but it was a friend who told her that this was no problem.

So she decided to have the ceremony, and she says she was happy with it. But two months later, her partner asked her to put his name on her application for permanent residency in Australia, since they are both foreigners. But she told him she couldn't do that because they weren't married. There, he revealed to her that the Sydney wedding had actually been real.

There, she also learned about the marriage certificate and marriage proposal that had been filed a month before their trip to Sydney. This had happened before they got engaged, and she hadn't even signed it. According to court documents, the signature doesn't look anything like the deceived woman's.

"I'm furious that I didn't know it was a real marriage and that he lied to me from the beginning because he just wanted me to put it on my application," she said.

The man said the two had agreed to the circumstances and that the woman had agreed to marry him in a small ceremony in Sydney. But the judge ruled that the woman had been misled about the nature of the ceremony and had not given her true consent to participate in the marriage.

"She believed she was acting. She even called the incident a hoax," the judge said. For this reason, he annulled the marriage, a decision that was made in October 2024.
