Morning coffee is good for the heart

According to a scientific study on cardiovascular medicine, those who drink coffee in the morning have a lower risk of death from heart disease and a reduced overall risk of mortality compared to those who drink coffee throughout the day.

The study, conducted by the European Heart Journal (EHJ), said that those who drank coffee in the morning had a 31 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and were 16 percent less likely to die early compared to others.

"This is the first study to test coffee drinking timing patterns and health outcomes," said lead researcher, Professor Lu Qi from Tulane University in the US.

Those who drank coffee throughout the day had the same risk of disease as those who did not drink coffee.

The authors analyzed dietary and health data from 40,725 adults aged 18 and older, collected between 1999 and 2018.

The study included a subgroup of 1,463 adults to validate and cross-reference dietary data and increase the accuracy and reliability of the overall findings.

The researchers linked the data to records of deaths and their causes for a follow-up period of nine to 10 years.

Consumption of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee was examined, categorizing the time of intake into morning, afternoon, and evening.

For morning drinkers, the amount of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee consumed, whether less than one cup or more than three cups per day, did not significantly alter the observed benefits. Morning coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of mortality regardless of the amount.

"In the morning hours, there is usually a noticeable increase in sympathetic activity as we wake up and get out of bed, an effect that fades during the day and reaches its lowest level during sleep. Thus, it is possible, as the authors point out, that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening disrupts the circadian rhythm of sympathetic activity. Indeed, many drinkers of alcohol throughout the day suffer from sleep disturbances," said Lu.

The study identified two main patterns of consumption, namely morning only and throughout the day. After nearly 10 years of follow-up, there were 4,295 deaths from all causes, including 1,268 from cardiovascular disease and 934 from cancer.

Lu emphasized that the findings remained consistent even after accounting for confounding factors and physical activity levels, dietary habits, and health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

"Overall, we should accept the now substantial evidence that drinking coffee, especially in the morning hours, is likely to be healthy. So, drink your coffee, but do it in the morning," Lu stressed.
