In 2021, Russian journalists from the investigative portal Proekt experienced one of the Kremlin's harshest punishments.

Roman Badanin was woken up at dawn by FSB agents who searched his apartment for hours and then interrogated him. His crime? A brief interview with a girl believed to be the illegitimate daughter of President Vladimir Putin.

"Putin's private life is an absolute taboo," Badanin said. "Russian journalists know the saying well: Don't touch his family."

Now in exile in California, Badanin and his collaborator Mikhail Rubin have published the book The Tsar Himself: How Vladimir Putin Deceived Us All, in which they reveal details about the Russian president's romantic life, a topic that the Kremlin guards with fanaticism.

Do they look alike? Putin at the age of 14 and Luiza Rozova, who is rumored to be his daughter.

The first shocking story concerns Svetlana Krivonogikh, a former cleaner from St. Petersburg, who became involved with Putin in the late 1990s. The relationship produced a daughter, Elizaveta (or Luiza Rozova), who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Russian president. After her birth, the mother's fortune changed dramatically: a £3 million apartment in Monte Carlo, properties in Moscow and St. Petersburg, a yacht, totaling over £78 million, as the Pandora Papers revealed.

Then came Alina Kabaeva, Olympic champion and one of the most famous women in Russia. Dubbed “the most resilient woman in the country,” she won a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and posed for Maxim magazine. It was then that she was introduced to Putin by her coach, Irina Viner. Their romance, which began around 2006, was marked by tragedy and silence: Kabaeva’s ex-boyfriend, singer Murat Nasyrov, died after “falling” from a balcony in Moscow.

In 2008, a Russian newspaper reported on an imminent marriage between Putin and Kabaeva. After the publication, the editor was forced to resign and the newspaper was closed under pressure from the FSB. Today, Kabaeva is believed to have two sons with Putin and heads the National Media Group, earning a salary of £7.7m a year.

Putin and his wife Lyudmila divorced in 2014 after nearly three decades of marriage. She described Putin as a “vampire” who worked 17-hour days, while he quipped that “anyone who could put up with her for three weeks deserves a monument.”

That same year, Putin was again rumored to be having an affair with Alisa Kharcheva, a 17-year-old student who had posed for an erotic calendar dedicated to the president. She was later accepted into one of Moscow's most elite universities and ended up living in a luxury complex.

According to Badanin and Rubin, for Putin’s circle “marriage is a formality, betrayal is the norm, and every woman depends on her husband for her career and wealth.” Today, Kabaeva remains closest to the role of “tsarina,” while the others have faded into the shadows.

Meanwhile, Roman Badanin lives in exile, declared "undesirable" by the Kremlin after daring to shed light on the intimate secrets of Russia's most powerful man.
