A new study from the University of Hong Kong has found that oleic acid, a compound found in olive oil and nuts, may strengthen immune cells that fight cancer cells. This healthy fatty acid may help the body create a first line of defense against infections and tumor growth, New Atlas reports.
During the experiment, the researchers isolated human cells and exposed them to different types of fatty acids commonly found in palm oil, meat and dairy products. They observed the survival, metabolism and ability of these cells to destroy tumor cells.
The results were promising: cells exposed to oleic acid remained fully functional, with stable mitochondria and active tumor-fighting mechanisms. In contrast, cells exposed to palmitic acid, which is found in animal fats, collapsed, writes A2 CNN.
Professor Wenwei from the Faculty of Medicine at HKUMed said that including foods rich in oleic acid, such as olive oil and avocado, could improve the body's "immune surveillance" and help make cancer treatments more effective.
However, the researchers emphasize that these conclusions have only been tested in laboratory models and mice, and have not yet been confirmed in humans. However, their findings reinforce the idea that naturally occurring healthy fats can have a major impact on cellular health and cancer protection.
