Barcelona removes asphalt to restore spaces to nature and adapt to heat waves

Authorities in Barcelona are expanding urban greening projects, removing layers of asphalt on some streets and squares to return more space to soil, rainwater and vegetation.

The initiative aims to make the city better prepared to cope with heat waves and intense rainfall, which have become increasingly frequent as a result of climate change.

According to experts, paved surfaces impede the natural absorption of rainwater, accumulate heat and worsen the quality of the urban environment. The restoration of vacant land and the planting of trees allow groundwater infiltration, reduce the temperature of the city and create more favorable conditions for biodiversity.

One of Barcelona's most popular projects is the superblocks (Superilles), which restrict vehicle traffic to certain areas, transforming them into green spaces that are friendly to pedestrians and cyclists.

Through the creation of new parks, the expansion of green spaces, and renaturalization projects, Barcelona is being considered a model for building greener, fresher, and more resilient cities to the effects of climate change.
