Fire in Barcelona metro, 136 injured from smoke and 39 hospitalized

A fire on the Barcelona metro has caused panic and left 136 people injured, most of whom suffered from smoke inhalation. According to Catalan media, the incident took place on the L1 metro line.

Emergency services said 129 people had minor injuries, while seven others were in moderate condition. In total, 39 people were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The fire broke out, filling the tunnels between Clot and Glòries stations with smoke. As a result, authorities organized the evacuation of passengers, while at Clot station, where the Rodalies railway station is also located, rescue teams pulled passengers from one of the trains.

Passengers described scenes of panic, saying the smoke was so thick that many were forced to use their cell phone lights to find their way out of the station.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire is suspected to have started after a part of the tunnel lining came loose and then caught fire.

Due to the incident, authorities temporarily suspended normal traffic on the L1 and L2 metro lines, as well as changed the routes of some bus lines. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident comes at a time when Spain is facing high temperatures and a wave of wildfires in several regions of the country, although authorities have not confirmed any link between the weather conditions and the incident on the Barcelona metro.
