A severe cold snap has hit the United States, bringing temperatures close to record lows. More than 170 million people from Boston to Florida will face the coldest spell of the season. The significant drop in temperature will begin Sunday and last until the middle of next week, affecting almost the entire continental United States.

Meteorologists are warning that parts of the southeastern United States could experience record temperatures as cold air spreads rapidly south. The city of Tallahassee, Florida, is also expected to experience sub-zero temperatures through Tuesday morning.

The sudden change is due to a powerful atmospheric disturbance moving in from Canada, causing significant drops in temperatures across North and Central America. Residents in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota woke up Sunday to temperatures in the single digits, due to wind chills.

The phenomenon is accompanied by heavy snowfall, with a snow thickness expected to reach more than 30 centimeters, in one of the first strong episodes of severe winter weather of the season.
