US President Donald Trump has threatened to send troops to Baltimore, escalating a clash with Maryland's Democratic governor, Wes Moore, who had invited him to join a "safety walk" in the city.

"If Wes Moore needs help, just like Gavin Newsom in Los Angeles, I will send in the 'troops', just like they are doing in Washington, DC, and we will quickly clean up the crime," Trump wrote on social media.

This is the latest episode in the president's efforts to use the National Guard in Democratic-run cities as part of a so-called anti-crime campaign.

Democrats have called this action an "abuse of power," while Governor Moore said that Trump's comments "are tone-deaf and ignorant."

Trump has already deployed about 2,000 troops to Washington, where the White House says hundreds of arrests have been made. According to the DC Metropolitan Police, violent crime has dropped significantly, to its lowest level in 30 years.

However, the president has warned that he may send troops to other cities such as New York and Chicago. This stance has provoked strong reactions from Democratic leaders, who accuse Trump of using the crime crisis as a political justification.

A Washington Post poll shows that almost 80% of Baltimore residents oppose the presence of federal troops and the National Guard in their city.
