Vietnamese authorities have ordered the evacuation of more than 586,000 people as Typhoon Kajiki rapidly approaches the country's coast. Forecasters have warned that the storm, already packing winds of up to 166 km/h, is expected to strengthen further before making landfall early Monday morning.

Evacuations are underway in the central provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue and Da Nang, where residents have been asked to leave their homes. All flights have been canceled, while ships have been banned from going to sea.

Meanwhile, the typhoon is passing near Hainan in China, where heavy rainfall of up to 320 mm has been recorded. According to BBC Weather, although the storm is expected to weaken somewhat as it moves towards Vietnam, it will continue to bring winds of up to 200 km/h and heavy rainfall of 300-400 mm, raising the risk of major flooding and landslides.

Also, storm surges of 2 to 4 meters are predicted, increasing the risk to coastal areas.

Authorities have asked residents not to go outside after 14:00 GMT on Sunday, while military forces have been deployed to assist with evacuation and security operations.

According to the ministry of agriculture and environment, the situation is "extremely dangerous and unsafe for any vehicle or structure," including fishing vessels, tourism vessels and aquaculture farms.

Vietnam Airlines has canceled at least 22 flights scheduled for Sunday and Monday, to and from central cities.

Vietnamese officials have expressed concern that Kajiki could cause devastation similar to Typhoon Yagi, which killed hundreds of people last year, including 300 fatalities in Vietnam alone.
