The owner of the Daily Mail has called for new regulations on Google's artificial intelligence (AI) after warning that early tests of the technology in search engines were causing a drop in online traffic.

DMG Media has written to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) saying that search giant Google's "Artificial Intelligence Summaries" were causing readability from Google searches to drop by up to 89%.

The publisher, which also owns the newspaper i, Metro and New Scientist, has called on the competition watchdog to expand the proposed regulation for the company to its Gemini chatbot and Google News service.

Google has disrupted many web publishers' business models in recent months by introducing AI summaries, in which responses generated by the company's artificial intelligence systems appear at the top of search results.

Internet businesses are concerned that this will reduce the number of people clicking the link list for which the company is most popular. They fear that the decline will accelerate with the release of Google's new "AI mode," which offers a much longer response with fewer links leading to relevant page articles.

In a submission to the CMA, DMG said that the click-through rate, the number of Google searches that result in someone visiting the Daily Mail website, dropped from 25.2% in regular desktop searches to 2.8% when a user sees an AI summary, an 89% drop. The decline was 87% for mobile searches.

Google's changes have been very detrimental to a range of publishers, although DMG Media noted in its submission that "one of the strengths of the Daily Mail website is the sheer amount of direct traffic it attracts."
