US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if he reaches a trade deal with China and warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that such a deal would endanger his country.

"China will eat Canada alive, devour it completely, including destroying their businesses, social structure and overall way of life," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

"If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the US."

Let us recall that Canadian Prime Minister Carney, during a recent visit to China, called the Asian country a "reliable and predictable partner" and in Davos encouraged European leaders to seek investment from the world's second largest economy.

Trump suggested that China would try to use Canada to avoid U.S. tariffs. “If Governor Carney thinks he’s going to make Canada a ‘dumping port’ for China to ship goods and products to the United States, he’s sorely mistaken,” he added.

Tensions between the US and its northern neighbor have increased in recent days.

Trump on Thursday withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his Peace Board initiative, which aims to resolve global conflicts. The move came after Carney's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he openly criticized powerful nations for using economic integration as a weapon and tariffs as a means of pressure.
