Donald Trump has walked back his statement on relocating Gaza residents to Jordan and Egypt, saying Palestinians would live better in a place "where there is no violence."

"I would like them to go to an area where they can live without unrest, revolution and violence," the US president told reporters aboard Air Force One, while insisting that Egypt and Jordan would accept.

Asked if this position means he no longer believes in a two-state solution, Trump avoided answering directly, saying he would discuss the issue with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he comes to Washington to meet him.

Two confidential sources told the Times of Israel yesterday that Netanyahu’s office is planning for the prime minister to travel to Washington on Sunday, where he will meet with Trump early in the week before returning to Israel on Wednesday. The trip has not yet been finalized and will depend on the health of Netanyahu, who is recovering from prostate surgery.

Jordan is already home to several million Palestinians, while tens of thousands more live in Egypt. Both countries and other Arab nations oppose the idea of Palestinians in Gaza being resettled in their own countries. Gaza is territory that Palestinians would like to see as part of a future Palestinian state.

A Hamas official highlighted Palestinians' long-standing fear that they would be permanently expelled from their homes.

The Palestinians "will not accept any offer or solution, even if they appear to have good intentions under the guise of reconstruction, as announced in the proposals of United States President Trump," Basem Naim, a member of Hamas's political bureau, told Reuters news agency.

Jordan rejected Trump's suggestion, with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi telling reporters that the country's stance against any displacement of Palestinians from Gaza remains "firm and unwavering."

Egypt has not yet commented, but has said on many occasions that it opposes the displacement of Palestinians.
