Tragedy in Greece, three dead in helicopter crash

Three people were killed after a private helicopter crashed near the heliport on the island of Sifnos, in the Tholos area, in Greece. The serious incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Monday, as the helicopter was approaching the island to land.

According to information reported by Greek media, the victims are the helicopter pilot and two passengers who were on board. The helicopter, hired by the Belavia company, had taken off from Markopoulo and crashed near the heliport area, in Tholos, while completing the landing maneuver.

Immediately after the collision, a fire broke out, causing alarm in the area. Emergency and firefighting forces were mobilized at the scene, which intervened to bring the flames under control and carry out the rescue operation. The helicopter crashed in an area near residential areas, increasing concern for residents and people nearby.

The Greek Fire Service Operational Center was notified of the incident at around 18:17. Initially, two firefighters with a vehicle responded to the scene, while a rescue team departed from the island of Syros towards Sifnos with a RAFNAR fast rescue craft of the Fire Service.

In the first minutes after the accident, there were conflicting reports about the number of victims. Some media outlets initially reported six deaths, but a later report put the death toll at three, namely the pilot and two passengers.

Greek authorities are expected to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident and the causes that led to the helicopter crash during its approach for landing.

The incident has caused shock in Sifnos, while emergency teams continue procedures at the scene and authorities are collecting data to determine the dynamics of the accident.
