Czech PM apologizes for picking flowers in protected area

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis publicly apologized on Sunday after picking some flowers in a protected area on Lysa hora, a mountain in eastern Czechia, saying he would pay a fine if necessary.

In a video posted on Facebook, Babis said he had picked the flowers while remembering a deceased colleague from his ANO political movement, with whom he had previously climbed this mountain.

"It is possible that I have broken some law, for which I apologize and, of course, if necessary, I will pay the fine," he said.

Footage from Saturday's hike, published on Babis' Facebook page, shows the prime minister climbing the mountain with a small bouquet of flowers, which he then placed next to a monument at the top.

Babis was accompanied by two ministers, ANO politicians and his supporters during the climb to the 1,324-meter peak, which is the highest point of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids mountain range.

An environmental expert, who works for an organization under the supervision of the Czech Ministry of the Environment, told local media outlet iDNES that Babis had plucked two completely common types of flowers, narrow-leaved epilobium and Fuchs' ragwort, and that he was unlikely to be punished.

"They are completely ordinary flowers. There is absolutely no problem, not even in a national park," said the expert, who did not identify himself by name.
