A young woman has died and another young man was seriously injured after they were attacked by a shark while swimming at a beach in the Australian state of New South Wales.

Police said the woman, believed to be in her 20s, died at the scene, while the man, also in his 20s, was airlifted to a Newcastle hospital in a critical condition.

According to police, emergency services were called to Kylies Beach, in Crowdy Bay National Park, about 300km north of Sydney, early on Thursday morning.

The BBC writes that it was a passerby who placed an improvised bandage to stop the bleeding on the young man's leg before emergency services arrived, which "may have saved his life."

“The courage of some witnesses is extraordinary in this situation,” Josh Smyth, chief of the New South Wales Ambulance Service, told reporters. “Putting yourself at risk to help is heroic and bought us valuable time to get to the injured person.”

The Department of Primary Industries said the shark involved in the attack was likely a "large bull shark".

Bull sharks, which are found in both fresh and saltwater, are “among the few sharks potentially dangerous to humans,” according to the Australian Museum. They are ranked as the third-deadliest shark species, according to the International Shark Attack File.

The beach has now been closed and "smart" devices have been installed which attract sharks with hooks so that they can be tagged and released again.

Surf Life Saving NSW announced that surrounding beaches will also remain closed for 24 hours, while drones will monitor the area.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest condolences go out to the families of the woman and man involved,” said Surf Life Saving NSW executive director Steve Pearce. “For the time being, please stay out of the water on surrounding beaches and follow the instructions of lifeguards.”

This is the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. The most recent occurred less than three months ago, when a man was killed in a rare shark attack on Sydney's northern beaches.
