Death toll from Hong Kong building fire rises to 44, 279 missing

A deadly fire has destroyed a massive apartment complex in Hong Kong, killing at least 44 people and leaving 279 others missing. According to foreign media, the fire has become the deadliest incident in at least 63 years. The cause of the fire is still unknown, while three people have been arrested.

The apartments were built in the early 1980s and had been under renovation for almost a year. Bamboo scaffolding and safety nets were installed throughout the complex - a construction technique common throughout Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is one of the last places in the world where bamboo is still widely used for construction scaffolding: flexible, durable and cheaper than steel and aluminum. However, last spring, the city government announced its intention to gradually replace bamboo with metal scaffolding, citing safety risks.

The most tragic event ever recorded in Hong Kong dates back to 1948, when an explosion on the ground floor of a five-story warehouse containing "dangerous goods" caused the deaths of 176 people.
