Belgrade blocks Kosovo's membership in Interpol

The European Union assesses that Serbia is violating its obligations from the process of normalizing relations with Kosovo and the dialogue agreement, by opposing Kosovo's membership in Interpol.

This was stated by an EU spokesperson, reacting to reports from Serbia that the country's Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, has been praised for continuing opposition to Kosovo's membership in this organization and that, according to this minister, "Kosovo has no chance of becoming part of Interpol."

Dacic also said that Kosovo has previously "failed badly when it tried to become a member of Interpol" and that now "it is clear that it has no chance, so it is not even trying."

The agreement on the path towards normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, among other things, obliges Serbia not to oppose Kosovo's membership in any international organization. The EU insists that this agreement is valid, that it must be implemented without delay, and that its implementation remains a condition for Kosovo and Serbia, both for their integration into the EU, and for financial benefits from the growth plan for the Western Balkans.

This, in his response, was stated by an EU spokesperson for Koha again. "Serbia's progress on the European path depends on efforts to fully implement the obligations from the 2023 agreement on the path to normalization. By opposing Kosovo's membership in Interpol in principle, Serbia is in violation of its obligations from the Ohrid Agreement, Article 4 of the agreement," said the spokesperson.

But the EU has not yet specified what the consequences will be for Serbia for such behavior, which the EU itself considers a violation. Some member states have often expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of measures against Serbia, while the European Commission maintains measures against Kosovo. Such an approach by some EU member states has been assessed as an "unbalanced approach".
