Fires in Hong Kong

At least 36 people have died after a fire spread to several high-rise apartment buildings in a housing complex in Hong Kong, according to Hong Kong's chief executive.

Seven of the eight buildings in the complex, which is home to a large number of elderly residents, are still on fire.

Firefighters are still unable to reach some residents trapped on upper floors, but vowed to continue their efforts to save every life.

Officials said 279 people are “uncontactable.” Meanwhile, 29 people remain hospitalized, with 7 of them in critical condition, officials said.

The fire, which destroyed the city's ubiquitous bamboo shacks, appears to be the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in nearly three decades.
