A group of military officers in Guinea-Bissau have taken control of the country, while initial reports say that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been arrested.
The coup erupted after gunfire broke out in the capital Bissau, where soldiers announced the suspension of the electoral process and imposed a nighttime curfew.
This development came at a time when the country was awaiting the announcement of the results of Sunday's presidential election, which included the two main rivals, Embaló and Fernando Dias.
After shots were heard near the presidential palace, government sources told the BBC that President Embaló had been detained.
Military officers then appeared on state television and announced the seizure of control of the state, accusing unidentified politicians of trying to destabilize the country with the support of a drug lord.
They announced the closure of the country's borders and the imposition of a curfew. Officers also urged the population to remain calm, while checkpoints were set up throughout the capital.
