Kurti-Abdixhiku meeting ends without agreement: We will meet again

The leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, also the acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, did not reach a political agreement during their three-hour meeting on August 4.

However, both Kurti and Abdixhiku warned that talks will continue with the aim of reaching an agreement on the establishment of Kosovo's institutions, resulting from the June 7 elections.

The meeting between Kurti and Abdixhiku, which lasted over three hours, took place two days before the constitutive session of the eleventh legislature.

"We do not have a political agreement. We discussed different approaches, the opportunities that lie ahead. We need a political agreement that respects the election result, does not replace it, but also transforms it into a contribution to institutional stability and the functioning of the Republic," Kurti said.

He added that the time for reaching an agreement has been shortened and without it, the country risks going to elections again.

Both Kurti and Abdixhiku stated that no specific names for the president were discussed at the meeting, but Kurti insisted on a consensual president.

According to him, the country's new president should not represent the fourth pole of power, should not be "involved in daily controversies."

"We are interested and ready to cooperate with the LDK, as far as the president is concerned, our position is that he should not be part of the political power, but of the representation of the Republic. I cannot bring a concrete name, because he would have to be consensual, inclusive, not be from the LVV," Kurti said.

But, for Abdixhiku, a consensual president is anyone who has 80 votes in the box.

"A consensual president is any president who receives 80 votes. LDK must feel represented in order to have its votes," said Abdixhiku.

Abdixhiku said that they agreed that if an agreement is not reached by the constitutive session on July 6, talks could continue, as he stated that his party is not interested in the Speaker of the Assembly.

"If nothing happens, we have requested that the constitution of the Assembly be continued. LDK has no appetite for the Speaker of the Assembly," he said.

Meanwhile, upon entering the Assembly, Kurti declared that he has sufficient support for the Assembly and the Government, but "the responsibility for electing the president is not only the majority, but also the opposition."

The meeting comes two days before the constitutive session for the eleventh legislature is held.
