FBI agent accused of stealing $1 million from accounts linked to Russia

A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) supervisory agent has been arrested and charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods after allegedly embezzling approximately $925,000 in cryptocurrency from accounts linked to a country adversary of the United States.

According to the Department of Justice, the arrested person has been identified as Patrick Yaroch.

Sources familiar with the matter told NBC News that Yaroch admitted to investigators that he had transferred about $925,426 worth of cryptocurrencies to his personal wallet, which were in accounts reportedly linked to Russia.

According to documents filed by the FBI, Yaroch stated that he was “disappointed” by the fact that the Bureau of Investigation “was unable or unwilling to take action against cryptocurrency accounts linked to adversary states.”

He told investigators he was unhappy that he could not do more to prevent the use of cryptocurrencies by countries like Russia.

According to an FBI affidavit, "Yaroch said he accessed FBI systems and found the keys necessary to transfer funds from the wallets to his account."
