US President Donald Trump's administration has considered the possibility of purchasing the Royal Mint Court complex in London, where China plans to build its new embassy, in case legal obstacles ultimately block the project's realization.
According to British media, this is an informal idea and in the exploratory phase, which according to its supporters would have great geopolitical importance, as Beijing would be denied the opportunity to open a diplomatic representation in one of the most strategic areas of the British capital.
The Chinese embassy project recently received the green light from the British High Court after a legal challenge, but local residents have warned that they will appeal the decision, leaving open the possibility of a continuing legal battle, media reports, citing Reuters.
US officials have previously expressed concerns about the location of the complex, due to its proximity to important communications infrastructure and potential national security risks.
However, the British government has stated that these concerns have been taken into consideration and that the necessary measures to mitigate the risks have been taken.
There have been no formal negotiations so far about a possible purchase of the complex by the United States. Any change of ownership would require approval from the relevant authorities in several countries.
