Tragedy in Peru, tourist plane crashes, 13 people killed

A tourist plane carrying European visitors to see the famous Nazca Lines from the air crashed on Saturday in a field near the city of Nazca, Peru, killing all 13 people on board.

According to local authorities, the plane had departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by the Peruvian company Aerodiana, which has been organizing panoramic flights over the Nazca Lines with Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft for 14 years.

The Nazca Lines are a complex of geoglyphs created hundreds of years ago by the indigenous people of Peru. They represent figures of animals and geometric shapes carved into the desert, which can only be fully seen from the air or from special observation towers.

The Peruvian Ministry of Transport announced that the victims included seven Italians, aged between 18 and 54, two Spaniards, both 52, and two Germans, aged 77 and 78. The pilot Américo Salazar and co-pilot Irenka Guanilo del Carpio were also killed.

The President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, expressed her condolences for the tragedy and announced that the temporary suspension of activity at Nazca airport is being considered, a decision that will be made after reports from the responsible ministries.

Peruvian authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of the accident, while the Aerodiana company has not yet given an official response.
