The monkey line continues to spread. Two other people have been diagnosed in the UK in cases not related to the previous infection, health experts said today.

One in two people, part of the same family, is being treated in hospital, the UK Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA) said.

The cases, which are the eighth and ninth confirmed in the UK, are not related to the case previously confirmed in England on 7 May.

Monkey pox is a rare viral infection that kills one in ten infected but does not spread easily among humans. The disease was first detected in the UK in 2018 after a traveler brought the virus from Nigeria and it spread to two other people, including a nurse. Health executives said it was important to note that the overall risk to the general public remains 'very low'. One of the most recent cases in London has been isolated and currently does not require hospital treatment, the UKHSA said.

Symptoms

The first symptoms of monkey pox are fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills and fatigue. A skin rash may develop, which changes and goes through different stages. The first human case of monkey pox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has since been discovered in a number of Central and West African countries.

Most cases have been reported in DRC and Nigeria. In 2003, the disease was discovered in the US when an outbreak occurred after the importation of rodents from Africa. The first cases in the UK were discovered in 2018. Another case was discovered in London in December 2019 and two more cases were discovered in North Wales in 2021. All cases were thought to be from travelers who had been to Nigeria. .
