What will the tunnel be like?

The longest and deepest underwater tunnel is being built in Norway, aiming to shorten travel times between cities and become part of a ferry-free highway along the west coast.

The 27-kilometer-long tunnel is called Rogfast (Rogaland fastforbindelse) after the region where it is located and the Norwegian word for "fixed connection".

At its deepest point it will be 392 meters below sea level.

Construction began in January 2018, but was halted at the end of 2019 due to projected cost overruns that led to the cancellation of existing contracts and restructuring of the project.

Work resumed in late 2021 and the tunnel is expected to be completed in 2033 and will cost approximately $2.4 billion.

By replacing ferry trips, Rogfast will reduce the travel time between Bergen and Stavanger by 40 minutes.

The tunnel will have two separate tubes, each with two lanes, and will also have a double roundabout at a depth of 260 meters leading to a connecting tunnel with Norway's smallest municipality, the island of Kvitsøy.

Building a tunnel this long and underwater poses several technological challenges. It will use lasers and sophisticated equipment, have an advanced ventilation system, signals that identify problems or traffic in real time, and cameras and radars to monitor vehicles.

The Rogfast project is part of the remodeling of the E39 coastal highway, a 1,100-kilometer route from Trondheim in the north and Kristiansand in the south.

Today, it takes 21 hours to drive this route, which includes seven ferries. The goal is to eliminate ferries by building tunnels and bridges. Completion is not expected before 2050.

Today, the world's longest tunnel with an underwater section is the Seikan in northern Japan, which is a 53.85-kilometer-long railway tunnel, with an underwater section of 23.3 kilometers.

The Channel Tunnel connecting England and France is 50.46 kilometers long, but its 37.9 kilometer underwater section is longer than Rogfast. But Rogfast will be deeper than both tunnels, which are 240 meters and 115 meters.
