A week after Congress resumes work after the summer break, Washington politics is back in motion and, as expected, Republicans are preparing to transform the year before the November 2024 presidential election into an ordeal for Joe Biden on at least three fronts: stopping the necessary funds for the functioning of the government, the sabotage of new aid packages for Ukraine (but here the right-wingers are divided) and above all, the beginning of the "impeachment" procedure against the democratic president.
Today, the first step has been taken. The House of Representatives in the US Congress will open an official investigation into the possible impeachment of President Joe Biden. This was confirmed by the top Republican official, Kevin McCarthy.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives clarified that the investigation will focus on "suspicions of abuse of power, obstruction of work and corruption".
Republicans have been investigating the president since they took control of the lower house of Congress in January. But in the hearings, no concrete evidence has emerged proving that Biden has committed a violation.
However, they have shed more light on the way the president's son, Hunter Biden, has done business, raising serious suspicions of legal violations.
"These allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption," McCarthy said, adding that Biden was aware of his son's activities.
Tuesday's announcement is the first step in a political process that could result in a House vote. If the impeachment of the president is approved by a simple majority, the decision goes to the US Senate.
The American Congress has the power to dismiss a president from office, through the process otherwise known as "impeachment", which is also considered the last executive step that can be taken.
In the history of the United States, no president has been able to be forced to leave the White House before the end of the term, while Richard Nixon was the first who preferred to resign, when he realized that the moment was coming to face this procedure.
