G20 summit begins in India, leaders reach consensus to take reins of war in

Despite deep divisions over the war in Ukraine and the absence of two key actors, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, the 20 largest economies in the world seem to have reached consensus on a joint statement at the summit being held in India.

The important announcement was made by the Prime Minister of the host country, Narendra Modi, who, however, did not give many details. There was little hope that the leaders could agree on the declaration, with the hot spot being how it would describe the war in Ukraine.

Modi gave another important news earlier in the day, when he announced that the African Union would join the group of largest economies. The Union will receive permanent member status in the G20, a decision considered historic as it is expected to strengthen the voice of African states.

The G20 summit is held for the first time in South Asia, with the participation of leaders such as Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak, Emanuel Macron or Olaf Sholc. On the table are issues such as climate change, food security and debt restructuring for poor countries.

The Indian prime minister hopes that an important summit will promote India's image as a global power ahead of next year's elections.
