Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will appear in court in New York today (Monday) after his arrest by the US military in an attack that left at least 32 Cubans dead.
The hearing will be held before Judge Alvin Hellerstein, the Southern District of New York Court said.
Maduro faces drug and weapons charges, a case that the government has pursued in court for 15 years and the president has been considered a defendant for 6 years.
He has been charged with “narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation, possession of weapons and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess weapons and destructive devices against the United States.”
President Trump summed up these accusations as Maduro's "deadly narco-terrorism campaign" against the United States and its citizens.
Maduro has previously denied being the leader of a drug cartel.
Trump has also called him an "illegal dictator," adding that he asked the Venezuelan leader to "surrender" a week before the attack.
Pam Bondi says Maduro and his wife “will face the wrath of American justice on American soil, in American courts.”
Judge Hellerstein has been dealing with the case for more than a decade. The 92-year-old is a highly experienced judge who has dealt with several important, high-profile cases.
