A former general and former director of Venezuela's 007 secret services, loyal to former President Hugo Chavez, recently pleaded guilty in the United States to drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.

Hugo Armando Carvajal Barrios , known as "El Pollo", who according to the American newspaper "Newsweek" is the main witness ready to give decisive testimony in the trial against Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

Once the right-wing, confidant of Chavez and his heir Maduro, now the chief accuser of a system he helped build.

Not out of any sincere remorse, but more to get a reduced sentence and for personal gain.

This is the story of "El Pollo", born in 1960 in Puerto La Cruz in Venezuela and who rose through the military ranks at its peak.

In 1992, Carvajal Barrios was among Hugo Chavez's main supporters in his failed coup attempt.

This action cost them both prison, but it inextricably linked "El Pollo" to the Bolivarian leader.

It was Chavez himself, after triumphing in the 1998 elections, who appointed Carvajal Barrios as head of the Venezuelan secret service.

According to the charges filed by the US Department of Justice, “El Pollo” managed a massive arms and drug trafficking operation in collaboration with the continent’s main cartels, such as the “Cartel de Los Soles” and the Colombian “FARC”. It is in this role that, according to US investigators, he participated in the transport of 5.5 tons of cocaine to the US.

In 2013, after Chavez's death, Carvajal Barrios' central role in Venezuela remained unchanged.

Agent number one decided to enter politics, becoming a pro-Maduro congressman.

The turning point came in 2019, when the Venezuelan economy was on its knees and the opposition was gaining momentum. “El Pollo” switched sides.

Nicolas Maduro reacted badly, accusing him of treason and forcing him to leave. Meanwhile, there was an arrest warrant for Carvajal Barrios from the US Department of Justice.

"El Pollo" was captured in Spain and extradited to the United States in 2023, where he faced the same charges that Nicolas Maduro and his wife now face: narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and arms trafficking.

On June 25, 2025, Carvajal Barrios pleaded guilty to all charges and reached a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.

However, the sentence was not ratified, perhaps because "El Pollo" had already begun negotiating a new agreement.

One thing that could include his testimony against his former leader and president.
