Nicknamed the "Polar Wolf", the prison is located above the Arctic Circle and is described as a "special regime colony", with temperatures in the region dropping below -30C in winter.

It is so far on the outskirts of civilization that it makes it almost impossible for visitors to reach the place.

Navalny was transported to the prison after previously serving time in the Melekhovo colony, roughly four hours from Moscow, where he had been staying for two years.

During his time in prison he suffered from health problems, possibly as a result of Novichok poisoning, for which he had sought treatment in the West.

Reporting back pain, stomach pain and numbness in his legs, the Russian opposition politician was denied medical access, medication and subjected to hourly checks throughout the night.

On January 22, he explained how prison guards often woke everyone up at 5 a.m. to sing the Russian national anthem.

"And right after that, the second most important song in the country: Shaman's 'Ya Russky,'" he said, a song that translates to "I'm Russian" and has become an unofficial anthem of Vladimir Putin.

However, his humor and charisma were still evident in December, when he gave an overview of the 1,200-mile (1,930 km) journey from Melekhovo to Kharp.

"My 20 days of transportation were pretty exhausting, but I'm still in good spirits, as befits a Santa," he joked.
