Russian forces have taken control of the city of Avdivka following the Ukrainian military's decision to withdraw troops.

The battle for Avdivka lasted several months, and is considered even bloodier than that for the city of Bakhman. According to Ukrainian authorities, over 5,000 Russian soldiers died attempting to seized the city, and more than 3,000 heavy Russian military vehicles were destroyed.

Russia recently intensified attacks on the city, with reports suggesting that the Kremlin wanted to invade Avdivka ahead of the presidential election. The city was surrounded by only one free evacuation route, and risked turning into a death trap for Ukrainian troops.

The decision to withdraw the troops was made by the new commander of the Ukrainian forces Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"Our soldiers have honorably fulfilled their military duty, done everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units, caused the enemy significant losses in manpower and equipment. We are taking measures to stabilize the situation and maintain occupied positions. The life of the soldiers is the highest value. We will still bring back Avdiivka," he wrote.

Ukraine has complained of a lack of military logistics and has decided to switch to defense positions until military aid from Western countries arrives.
