Turkish police are investigating the case of a family of four from Hamburg, Germany, who died while on vacation in Istanbul, suspected of being the result of chemical poisoning.

The Böcek family fell ill on November 12 after a day of visiting and eating on the city's streets, according to the Turkish state news agency, Anadolu.

They were initially treated for food poisoning and released from the hospital, but later returned with worsening symptoms.

Two children, Kadir, 6, and Masal, 3, died on Thursday, while their mother, Cigdem, 27, died a day later.

The father, Servet, 38, was in critical condition over the weekend and passed away on Monday.

Initially, authorities thought the cause was food poisoning and arrested the vendors on Istanbul's touristy Ortaköy street.

However, investigators shifted focus to pesticides after two other tourists, staying at the same hotel, were hospitalized on Saturday.

Turkish media reported that a flea-killing product was sprayed in a ground-floor room and could have ended up in the family room through the ventilation system.

The hotel in Istanbul's old city has been closed by municipal authorities, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Forensic teams collected samples from sheets, pillows, water bottles and blankets.

The preliminary forensic report said further analysis is needed, but it is believed that an environmental toxin was the main cause of death, while food poisoning is considered less likely.

"Considering the incident, medical history and the fact that two other people from the same hotel were hospitalized with similar symptoms, it is believed that the mother, father and children died as a result of chemical poisoning from the hotel environment," the report said, according to Anadolu.

Seven of the 11 detained suspects have been sent to Istanbul's main court and are awaiting further proceedings.

The family is buried in their hometown of Bolvadin, in central Turkey. Cigdem's father, Mehmet Celik, told Turkish media: "My daughter had recently finished renovating the summer house with the hope of one day living there. They died without ever being able to sleep in it."
