Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a post on X that the appointment of Sinwar, whom he called a terrorist, "is yet another compelling reason to swiftly eliminate and wipe this vile organization off the face of the earth."

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing of hamas' previous leader, Ismail Haniyeh, but after his death on July 31 Iranian leaders blamed Israel and vowed to respond for the move.

On Wednesday, Hamas named Yahya Sinwarit, one of the architects of the Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel, as its new leader, a move that Mr. Katz said sends "a clear message to the world that the Palestinian issue is now fully controlled by Iran and Hamas."

Foreign Minister Katz also said Israel must maintain security control over the Israeli-occupied West Bank in order to prevent Iran from creating another "extremist center."

The Israeli military has been conducting operations in the West Bank, which it says are aimed at deterring militant activity and possible attacks against Israel. Nearly 600 people have been killed in Israeli operations in the West Bank since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October.

Given the threat to a response to Israel by Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukur's assassination last week in Beirut, fears have grown about the possibility of a widening regional conflict.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday that everyone in the region must "take decisions that will de-escalate tensions."

"We will continue to defend Israel against attacks by terrorist groups or their supporters, just as we will continue to protect our troops," Blinken said. "But everyone in the region needs to understand that further attacks deepen conflict, instability and insecurity for all."

Blinken said the only way to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip and bring calm to the region is to achieve a ceasefire.

The White House said Tuesday that President Joe Biden had spoken by phone Tuesday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Qatari leader Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani to renew efforts to reach a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. The leaders "agreed on the urgent need to close the process as soon as possible," the White House said in a statement.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 terror attack, in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 others taken hostage. Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip killed about 40,000 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, while Israel says it has killed thousands of Hamas fighters.
