First Lady Melania Trump has threatened to sue Hunter Biden for more than $1 billion after he said she was introduced to Trump through Jeffrey Epstein.

The First Lady's lawyers described the accusation as "false, harmful, defamatory and inflammatory," the BBC reports.

Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, made the comments during an interview in which he sharply criticized Trump's ties to Epstein. Donald Trump was a friend of Epstein, but in the 2000s they stopped speaking after the financier took employees who worked at the US president's beauty salon to his golf club in Florida.

Melania Trump's lawyers sent a letter to Hunter Biden's lawyer demanding that he retract the statement and apologize or face a lawsuit for "$1 million in damages." It states that the First Lady has suffered "tremendous financial and reputational harm" due to his statement.

It also accuses Biden's son of having "an endless history of placing epithets on others" and repeated the accusation that he is "trying to get attention."

During an interview with filmmaker Andrew Callaghan, Hunter Biden stated that unreleased documents related to Epstein “would implicate” President Trump. “Epstein introduced Melania to Trump, the connections are broad and deep.”

Melania's legal brief notes that the statement was partly attributed to Michael Wolff, a journalist who wrote a biography critical of the president. The latter has said that she was acquainted with a friend of Epstein and Trump when she met the latter.

Later, the media outlet he had spoken to retracted the article after receiving a letter from Melania Trump's lawyer questioning its content.

There is no evidence that the pair were introduced by Epstein, who committed suicide in prison while awaiting trial in 2019.

Melania's letter comes after weeks of pressure on the White House to release the Epstein files, documents related to the criminal investigation into the notorious pedophile. Before his re-election as president, Trump said he would release them, but the FBI and Justice Department said in July that no "incriminating" list of clients of Epstein's acquaintances existed.
