Closing statements began this Monday at the Special Court in The Hague in the court case against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, former parliamentarians Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP Rexhep Selimi.
Prosecutor Kimberly West has said that punishment is not sought for the KLA General Staff, but for the accused persons, requesting 45 years in prison.
"The Specialized Prosecutor's Office is seeking a conviction for all counts of the indictment and a single sentence of 45 years, based on the individual contributions of the crimes committed by each of the individuals, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi. These are war crimes and crimes against humanity, they are serious and these charges have not lost their value with the passage of time," she said.
It has claimed that 100 people were killed and hundreds more were abused, in and around 50-plus detention camps of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).
"This case is about the intent of the four defendants to gain and exercise control over all of Kosovo. This determination for power and authority was met with resistance, and that resistance was met with individuals who had come forward as opponents or were identified as collaborators with Serbian forces, or Serbian officials, or who did not support the goals of the KLA ," West said.
According to her, it often included people associated with the Democratic League of Kosovo, Roma and Serb people.
"In order to achieve their goal, these accused persons committed crimes against their perceived opponents in order to gain control throughout Kosovo," she added.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Alan Tieger reiterated that Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli were on the front lines of the KLA from the beginning and had an important role.
Tieger mentioned that the two went to Switzerland in 1994 and until 1998 returned to Kosovo every 3-4 months and stayed there for several weeks each time.
"Thaci and Veseli had important tasks during that time, to maintain contacts, to bring weapons, including seven of the 12 RPGs that were used in the synchronized attacks on 12 Serbian police stations in September 1997," he said, according to REL.
According to him, Thaçi gained the reputation of the person who connected the fighters in Kosovo and the planners living in exile.
We recall that Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, to which all four have pleaded not guilty.
The crimes are alleged to have been committed between March 1998 and September of the following year in several locations in Kosovo and northern Albania.
