New York is experiencing extreme cold that even surpasses polar cold. The country has recorded temperatures in some areas lower than certain parts of Antarctica.

On Sunday, the city recorded a temperature of around -16 degrees Celsius to -26 degrees.

The National Weather Service warned of extreme cold conditions and confirmed that this is the longest period of low temperatures in more than a decade in some areas.

According to data published by meteorological services, the cold in some areas of northeastern Mexico reached almost -40 degrees Celsius.

Authorities warned more than 43 million people to exercise caution, including major metropolitan areas such as New York and Philadelphia.

Weather conditions were exacerbated by strong winds and locally heavy snowfall, coupled with an atmospheric system that produced bands of rapidly accumulating precipitation. In parts of upstate New York and northern New England, temperatures reached between -29 and -34 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists warned that under these conditions, frostbite of exposed skin could occur in less than 30 minutes.

In recent weeks, at least 17 people have died in New York City from staying outside during the storm, and 13 of those deaths were confirmed as a direct result of hypothermia.
