The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Sunday that he is committed to reaching an agreement for the normalization of relations and mutual recognition with Serbia, while he warned of full reciprocity if such an agreement is not reached.

He made these comments during the work of the General Council of the Vetëvendosje movement, a day after Kosovo and Serbia agreed on the free movement of citizens of both countries.

With this agreement, Serbia agreed to abolish entry-exit documents for holders of Kosovo identification documents, and Kosovo agreed not to apply them to citizens from Serbia.

"We are an independent and sovereign state and we want good neighborly relations with all our neighbors on the basis of equality and reciprocity. Serbia does not recognize and fights our independence, therefore our relations are not normal and because our relations are not normal, we are in a normalization process. We want to have normalization and do this through an internationally and legally binding agreement for full normalization of relations with mutual recognition in the center", said Prime Minister Kurti.

He said that in the absence of an agreement, there will be full reciprocity which will be established gradually.

"Reciprocity in the relationship is dictated by our sovereignty. We cannot not exercise the sovereignty that we have declared just as we cannot behave neutrally towards ourselves or make decisions that create dualism in our legal system", he said.

The agreement a day ago, which was widely welcomed by Western diplomacy, followed a period of tension between Kosovo and Serbia after the central government's decision in Pristina to implement reciprocity measures for the use of identification documents and car number plates.

A two-month deadline for converting car license plates for Serbian citizens who use the acronyms of Kosovo's cities from the time of Yugoslavia is expected to start from September 1. With the decision of the government, the users of these license plates must return them to those of the Republic of Kosovo RKS.

The decision is opposed by Belgrade. The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said on Sunday that Serbia achieved the best possible from the agreement with Pristina on identification documents, while commenting on the warnings of Prime Minister Kurti regarding the car license plates, he said that "he wants constant conflicts and problems". .

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that the government's decisions are an expression of the exercise of sovereignty.

"I am engaged and committed to actively and creatively, in cooperation and coordination with our allies, especially with the USA and the EU, to reach a legally binding agreement with mutual recognition at the center of the agreement, which brings lasting peace, stability and contributes to Balkan security", he said.

He invited the opposition political parties for a meeting as the informant and coordinator for the negotiation process, at a time when Kosovo is already expected to face the pressure to implement the agreement for the Association of Serbian municipalities.

Belgrade insists that this agreement be laid out in the next talks, while international factors have called on the government to come up with a proposal for the establishment of the Association.

Serbia, a candidate country for membership in the European Union, must improve relations with Kosovo, whose independence it continues to oppose, before considering its inclusion in the European bloc.
